Intro to 2019 Photo Blog: 2019 is a journey into the world of non-verbal healing and personal growth here at Mind, Soul, and Self LLC. I have come to understand, true ways to heal spiritually, psychologically and emotionally are non-verbal: through art, music, movement, meditative states, and bodywork/energy work. The language of the soul/psyche is symbols, images, colors, vibrations, sensations, and patterns; we communicate this non-verbally. I have been on an incredible personal growth journey of my own the past few years into the world of art. I have become very involved with John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) in Sheboygan, WI. I am the chair of the JMKAC Indoor Gardens, a member of the Friends of the Arts Council, and a museum docent (teacher/tour guide). I try to take a new art class every month. I started joining my artist husband in his art studio to paint and experiment with making art. Coincidentally, my old office space was located in an art gallery and my current office space is in an entire building of art studios. My preferred social media has become Instagram. I try to post a new photograph every day. I have enjoyed experimenting with art and photography as ways to express myself. So I have decided to have a photoblog this year to complement this personal and professional journey that I am on. I just recently had a revelation regarding my photography and am working on a project I hope to release later this year.

December 2019 Photo Blog: The Higher Heart Chakra is a newer emerging chakra. Not a traditional “yoga” chakra. It is located between the Heart and Throat chakras on the Thymus. This energy center was gifted to us at the beginning of time, but lie dormant until recently. It is here to help us integrate and process the new energies coming to the earth. It is activated in those who have reincarnated at this to help heal humanity. Not many people teach about this Chakra. I feel as if part of my life mission is to share that there are many more than just 7 chakras! The Chakra and energy system has been evolving as humans and the energies on earth have been changing. We are waking up and becoming multidimensional! I consider the Higher Heart a main Chakra. It reflects a person’s understanding, acceptance and practice of the universal concepts of Universal Love, Peace, and Compassion. ‘Walking the Talk’ of the Heart Chakra. Not just saying you understand unconditional love, but actually putting it into practice. The Higher Heart is activated in Healers, as it shows a person’s ability and/or calling to healing/teaching work. Its functions include: unconditional love for all of humanity, healing the world around you, increasing the vibration of humanity, practicing the lessons of the heart, serving, donating, volunteering, giving back to your community in some way, generosity, altruism, and humanitarian work. Serving your community is a function of the Higher Heart. Those with an activated Higher Heart feel that they are here for some greater purpose and that they can influence the world by their actions. Below is my month of December in pictures…photos of my volunteer and charity projects this month. My hope is that this inspires you to jump-start your higher heart and get involved in giving back to your community in some way. How you serve humanity? If you currently don’t volunteer, donate your time or resources, or do some sort of service/humanitarianism, WHY NOT?? Most people think when we talk about “healing” humanity we are referring to setting up a healing business like yoga, massage, Reiki, etc. We can heal the world in a lot of different ways. The world and humanity need a lot of help right now. How can you assist?? Light, Love, and Blessings. Christina~

Illuminated Healer vs. Charlatan

Illuminated Healer Vs. Charlatan

I have had several personal experiences this week that have prompted the writing of this blog.  In the 18 years I have been working in the mental health, spirituality, personal growth, and healing fields I have met many healing facilitators. Yes, I prefer to use the word “healing facilitator” instead of healer. I think when you use the word “healer” to describe yourself you disempower your clients and patients and make healing a passive process instead of an active process.  Clients come to you expecting you to wave the magic wand and “poof” make them all better. When in reality, the only one who can truly heal someone is themselves. It is an internal process, not an external one.  Sure, you can massage away someone’s sore muscles, recommend a beneficial blend of herbs and essential oils, balance their chakras, etc. but true healing involves changing your own thought process, engaging coping skills, and modifying your lifestyle and behaviors.

In my 18 years as a teacher, student, healing facilitator, and former frequent flyer at wellness and psychic fairs, I have met hundreds of others in the healing arts. I see two types of healing facilitators; those doing it truly as their life purpose and those who are, as my friend Jennifer-Anne calls it, “Riding the Trend Guru Wannabes.” So I am going to explore these two types of healers, the two sides of the Healer Archetype today, the Illuminated Healer vs. The Charlatan.

First of all, lets define an archetype. The term “archetype” has its origins in ancient Greek. The root words are archein, which means “original or old”; and typos, which means “pattern, model or type.” So literally, an archetype is the original pattern. The psychologist, Carl Jung, used the concept of archetype in his theory of the human psyche.  Archetypes are universal energy patterns and behavior roles that reside in our collective unconsciousness and govern human behavior and motivation. Some spiritual traditions may also call the realm where the archetypes reside, the Akashic Records.  Archetypes are the energies which your soul interacts with to create and form every aspect of our life.  We usually have several dominant archetypes playing out in our life and influencing us. Archetypes are universal through different cultures and languages. When you think of an archetype, you usually can easily conjure up the image and behavior traits of that archetype. For instance, The Warrior. When you think of this energy pattern, what pops into your mind? A man with a shield and sword? Militant, masculine, disciplined?  Ready to defend and protect? Since these energy patterns are collectively inherited unconscious ideas easily accessible in everyone’s psyche, we usually can think of them and bring them clearly into our consciousness. There are hundreds of archetypes. Some examples include Mother, Hero, Child, Student, Teacher, Trickster, and of course, The Healer. Every archetype has two sides, the illuminated/healthy/balanced side and the shadow/dark side.

The Healer archetype is an old archetype and has existed since the dawn of humanity. Every culture from ancient man to modern times, has the archetype of the Healer, often known as The Shaman or Medicine Man.  Archeological evidence suggests the healer concept is at least 100,000 years old and is ingrained in our primitive primordial collective memories.  In modern culture, the Healer Archetype can consist of nurses and doctors as well as energy workers, herbalists, massage therapists, and yoga teachers. Part of being human is experiencing hurt and pain. Wounds can be emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, and energetic. As long as we experience pain, there will always be someone who feels called to help us heal this pain.

The Healer Archetype has two sides, the Illuminated Healer and The Charlatan.

The Illuminated Healer: Comes from the heart and higher heart. Feels helping others is their life purpose and passion. Feels they were incarnated into this life time for the higher good of humanity. Empowers their clients to heal themselves. Is genuine, empathetic, compassionate, and sympathetic.

Illuminated healers:

  • Network with other healing facilitators
  • Support other healing facilitators
  • Like working together as a team with their clients and other facilitators
  • Have affordable fees for services and classes
  • Often offer discounts and sliding scale fees
  • Often are engaged in charity work and/or donate and volunteer
  • Are genuinely concerned for their client’s well-being
  • Establish healthy boundaries
  • Don’t believe that healing is a competition
  • Are open to constructive feedback
  • Don’t believe that they are the only one who can help their clients
  • Don’t play God
  • Give others credit when credit is due and doesn’t steal others’ ideas
  • Knows there are enough clients to go around and doesn’t engage in “turf wars”
  • Does not exaggerate their credentials and training
  • Understands that the universe will send to them clients they can best serve
  • Does not create dependent clients…empowers their clients
  • Ask questions and gather more data when they don’t understand something
  • Are not afraid to admit they do not know something
  • Are non-judgmental
  • Understand that we are all here for the same reason, to help light up the world

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Have you felt or heard a call from the divine to facilitate healing in others?
  • Do you truly understand the concepts of Universal Love, Acceptance, and Compassion? Do you practice these concepts?
  • Do you serve all of humanity in some way (donate, volunteer, humanitarian work etc)?
  • Do you have a strong, positive network of business acquaintances?
  • Do you have strong self-esteem and personal boundaries?

The Charlatan/Shadow Healer: Not true of heart. Comes from the lower chakras….power, greed, war. In the healing arts to boost their own ego, become popular and well-known, for personal gain, to take advantage of others, and/or to make money. Psychic vampires. Often have ulterior motives. Attempts to maintain control of the patient, offering advice and treatment based on their needs and ego. They often depend on the client for validation and reinforcement. They promote themselves as someone who can heal others rather than promoting self-healing. Desperate for approval and validation. Often have a real problem with boundaries. “They feel so certain of their ability to help others that they end up being pushy, driving people away from them. With this complete lack of boundaries the Shadow Healer can feel unappreciated, taken advantage of, and just plain abused. At its worst, the Shadow Healer is a self destructive, self-important pretender that has poor self esteem and even poorer boundaries,” (Suzanna Barlow, 2012).

Charlatans/Shadow Healers:

  • Disrespect and talk negatively about other healing facilitators
  • Disrespect and talk negatively about healing modalities they do not utilize
  • Do not understand that there are many roads to wellness and different modalities may work for different people
  • Often have extraordinarily high prices for services, fees, and products
  • Have poor boundaries
  • Gets high on approval from others
  • Loves being on a pedestal and being worshipped
  • Craves Guru status
  • Has external self-esteem and needs others to boost their feelings of self-worth
  • Feel they are in competition with other healing facilitators and teachers
  • Steals other’s ideas and hardwork and passes it off as their own
  • Creates dependency with clients
  • Thinks their way is the only way
  • Is closed-minded
  • Cannot take constructive feedback
  • Over-exaggerates their credentials and training and misleads others
  • Has fake compassion and empathy
  • Thinks they are more gifted and special than others
  • Takes advantage of others
  • Feels superior to others

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I  sometimes feel that I am extraordinary, special or have special gifts that others don’t have?
  • Am I offended when I have helped someone and they don’t thank me or seem appreciative?
  • Do I find I want to take credit for someone else’ healing because I was a part of it?
  • Do others often become dependent on me for support, advice, healing or guidance?
  • Is it difficult to remain humble or invisible when helping another person?
  • Do I tend to have blurry boundaries?
  • Do I get jealous of other people’s ideas, success, and want it for myself?

So, look deep within yourself….are YOU an Illuminated Healer or a Charlatan???? Are you here to help heal the world or further your own agenda?? True personal growth and transformation is shifting from the shadow side of an archetype to the illuminated side.

By identifying and exploring your own archetypal patterns, you come to understand your true self. Becoming aware of what healer archetype you are, Charlatan or Illuminated, and why you do what you do is a great place to start. Ask yourself:
• How long has this archetypal pattern been a part of my life?
• Do I know its origin?
• What role has this archetype played for me?
• What impact has this archetype had on my personal evolution or de-evolution?
• What have I learned about my self? What changes do I need to make?

Remember, introspection is difficult, but rewarding. We all want to be the best we can be in this lifetime. But if you cannot find a way to shift from Shadow Healer to Illuminated Healer than you are definitely not in the right career field….

emPATHETIC vs. Empowered Empath

Dirty%20AuraIf you are in the spiritual, metaphysical, healing arts, energy medicine, or personal growth fields, I’m sure you have heard the term ‘empath’ or ’empathy,’ particularly from others using this term to describe themselves.

The empathy people are speaking of is actually ‘Clair-empathy.’  This is literally the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and feel what they are feeling. ‘Clair’ means clear and is the prefix used to describe intuitive and psychic abilities. Clairsentience is clear feeling (feeling the spirit/energy world), clairvoyance is clear sight (seeing the spirit/energy world), clairaudience is clear hearing (hearing the spirit/energy world), and clairempathy is clear emotion (feeling emotions from the spirit/energy world).

Clairempathy is the intuitive ability of the heart chakra and allows you to tap into other’s emotions and feelings and clearly feel them as if they were your own. Often times people are unaware they have this ability and/or are not skilled in working with it. They can get confused with where certain emotions are coming from and with what is happening. This can feel absolutely overwhelming and draining. Some empaths may find that they take on the emotions or symptoms of others. Being in large crowds, or around negative people can be uncomfortable and difficult. It can empty our battery and make us constantly tired and fatigued.  Empaths often are diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. But, are the negative emotions they feel their own or someone else’s? If this describes you, it is important to ask yourself where your feelings are coming from, particularly if you feel an emotion or physical symptom come on suddenly. Learn to distinguish and differentiate between your emotions and the emotions of others. Do not own others’ emotions. Do not take on their energy. Stay detached.

Empathy can be both a blessing and a curse depending on how you view it and what you do about it. The ability to truly understand someone and what they are feeling is the foundation of being an exceptional healing facilitator. Someone who utilizes and experiences their gift of empathy is empathetic. But empaths need to learn to turn up the volume when appropriate and turn it down to control their empathy and not let it control them.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of ‘pathetic’ is “causing feelings of sadness and sympathy.” When individuals become aware they are empaths and let themselves become victim to their empathy, allowing it to immobilize them and stay stuck and miserable, I call this emPATHETIC…. sadness and misery from having the gift of empathy.  Individuals complain and feel burdened by their empathy and do not learn skills to cope with being an empath. They allow it to torture them.  I have even seen clients allows their empathy to control them as a way to get sympathy from others as well as make excuses for bad behaviors…. “but I am an empath!!!”  Remember, you don’t have to feel like shit if you don’t want to. You can have 100% control over the way you feel.

I have worked in the counseling and psychology field for over 18 years. I specialized in addition counseling and dual diagnosis before moving into personal growth, spiritual psychology, and positive psychology in 2008. In all my previous client sessions with individuals with addiction, depression, personality disorders, etc, I have never seen anything render clients as helpless as EMPATHY. They become frozen and consumed. They are constantly tired because not only do they take on other’s energy and emotions, but they also give away their energy.

I too have clairempathy, but I do not let it control my life. Other’s negative energy/emotions can only effect you if you let it. Stop giving away your sunshine and your power. Reclaim your power and your energy. You don’t have to use empathy as a label and become a self-fulfilling prophesy of misery and stay stuck. Become an EMPOWERED EMPATH, not emPATHETIC!!

Dr. Christina’s Tips for Empowered Empaths:

1). Practice good energy hygiene. Just as many people shower or bathe their physical body most days you must also bathe your energetic body (aura). Cleanse your energy field every day. Smudging, meditation techniques, energywork, crystals, etc. It doesn’t matter what technique you use as long as you believe it works, have the intent that is works, and use it every day.  A technique that I like to do is called Release and Recover. I close my eyes and visualize or somehow become aware of my aura, the collection of energy around me. I scan my aura and identify pieces that don’t belong to me. I ask my angels/guides/the universe to send those pieces of energies back to their owners and release that energy and visualize the energy leaving my aura. Then I recover my energy that I have unintentionally given to others. I ask my angles/guides to bring back my pieces of energy that I have given away. I visualize those energies coming back to me and entering my aura. Then I clearly say to myself that “I am whole and complete. All pieces of the puzzle are put back together again.”

2). Practice energy protection and shielding techniques. A healthy aura is a collection of all of YOUR energies…not bits and pieces of others. A simple protection technique is a bubble of protection. Visualize a protective bubble of energy….kind of like a sleeping bag. It can be any color you wish, whatever comes to mind as being protective. I usually use purple, but that’s just me. Visualize yourself stepping into this bubble of protective energy, and pulling it up and around you. Pull it all the way over your head so you are completely encased in its protective warmth. Then “zip” it up, just like a sleeping bag. You are now encased in a protective bubble of energy. Then I program my bubble with my intent. “This is my bubble of protective energy. It protects me and keep me safe from unwanted energy. It keeps my energy to myself and keeps others’ energies off me.”

3). Practice having good energy boundaries. Learn where you begin and end and where others begin and end. My energy is mine and belongs to me. I love you, but I will not give you my energy, nor will I take on your energy. Have this as a clear intent. Remember, intent is everything. Energy flows where thoughts go.

4). Practice good physical, interpersonal, and emotional boundaries. Unfortunately, I have found many who let their empathy control them have poor emotional, physical, and relationship boundaries. Practice assertiveness. Learn that it is ok to say no if you don’t want to do something. Don’t let others touch you without your permission. Put yourself first….always. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

5). Be careful with your words and how you speak to yourself. Thinking thoughts like “I feel sorry for them,” gives your energy away to others. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.

6). Consider learning a form of energy healing, such as Reiki, to increase your vibration and to help you learn how to channel energy. You never want to give someone your own energy. We want to be channels. Healing energy that we send to others comes from the divine or mother earth. It should not come directly from us.

7). For those people who work with clients and patients, particularly hands-on-healing facilitators who touch clients (nurses, massage therapists, etc) and energy workers and psychics/mediums/intuitives, it is important to separate from your clients when you are done working with them. Cut all psychic ties with the client and separate your aura from the client’s aura. Declare to yourself that the healing session/reading is over.

Remember, you have ultimate control!! I wish you much love and light on your journey!
