You may be wondering why a holistic healing and spirituality business offers so many plant and gardening classes. Let me explain to you why…..

As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…”― Hermes Trismegistus

This is my favorite quote. It deeply resonates with me for a number of reasons. The concept implies that the cosmos is linked to nature and that the microcosm and the macrocosm are connected. We are divine and the divine is us. The earth is a mirror of the larger universe. One way I personally interpret this quote is that we can connect to the divine through nature. Plants and Spirituality. Spirituality is a personal and individual practice of developing one’s inner reality/inner path. Spirituality is feeling like a whole and complete person with meaning and purpose. It’s searching inside yourself for the answer. It is an inner path enabling you to discover the true essence of your being; the deepest values, morals, and meanings by which you live. It’s a feeling as if there is something greater than yourself; a higher power or a higher being, nature or the cosmos. You feel that you are more than just a physical body. You feel connected to others and to your surroundings. Spirituality is often experienced as a source of inspiration or orientation in life.

Nature has been an incredible teacher to me in developing and deepening my spirituality. Nature is my church. A beautiful sunset is a mystical experience. Admiring beautiful plants and flowers inspires me. Walking through the forest, I feel so connected and a part of something much greater than myself. Caring for a garden; watching it grow; harvesting it; then making food or medicine or art from those same plants I grew gives my life so much purpose and meaning.  I am both a creator and a caretaker. Humans forget that we too are nature. When we get out of sync with the natural rhythms, the seasons, and earth’s creations we can feel existential emptiness. Being attentive to the cycles of nature can impact your spiritual, physical, and emotional health for the better.

The human/plant connection can be traced back all the way to prehistory (the time before writing systems were developed). We find that different cultures around the world, for thousands and thousands of years, have been utilizing plants as medicine, for fun, for ritual, for divination, for altered consciousness, for decoration, for food, for clothing, for art, and for aroma/perfumery. Plants are and have always been the principal form and oldest form of medicine for the majority of the world, since the beginning of time. Several diverse lines of evidence indicate that medicinal plants represent the most widespread form of medication. The use of herbal medicines has been documented for over 6000 years. Anthropologists and archeologists have found evidence that prehistoric man took medicinal plants and botanicals to cure health problems. In addition to using plants for medicine, the act of gardening and caring for plants can also improve all areas of your life and wellbeing…physically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially. Spending time outside is good for our bodies and our minds. Research has shown gardening can help us: connect to others, connect to nature, connect to something greater than ourselves, help us be in the present moment, reduce stress and depression, improve mood, provide us with exercise and fresh air, and helps us reach higher states of consciousness through mindfulness. Plants are amazing!

My mother and grandfather were both avid gardeners. I grew up a little girl among the flowers. I started my professional and personal journey into holistic healing over 20 years ago with aromatherapy and essential oils. I then evolved into an herbalist and more recently, a gardener. I had a spiritual awakening in 2005. At that time, I lived on a 200-acre farm in the middle of nowhere. That time immersed in nature changed my life. I am a Certified Aromatherapist, Herbalist, Natural Perfumer, have Wisconsin Master Gardener Training and a PhD in Health Psychology with 22 years of higher education and experience in psychology, spirituality, holistic healing, and natural health. I am a Member of the American Botanical Council, I am the Project Chair of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center Indoor Garden, I teach Continuing Education Gardening Classes at University of Wisconsin Green Bay, I am a Botanical Artist, and a supporter of organic farming and non–GMOS. My business-Mind, Soul, and Self LLC believes plants are essential to spirituality and holistic healing. Enhance your spirituality, connection to nature, and holistic healing abilities. Ok….now to the Photoblog…..

February 2020 Photoblog: Care for yourself while caring for mother earth! Connect to the divine by connecting to nature! It’s hard for me to put all of this into words, so let me show you with pictures:

**All photos are the property of Christina Wilke-Burbach. All rights reserved ***

My PhotoBlog: I have come to understand, true ways to heal spiritually, psychologically and emotionally are non-verbal: through art, music, movement, meditative states, and bodywork/energy work. The language of the soul/psyche is symbols, images, colors, vibrations, sensations, and patterns; we communicate this non-verbally. I have been on an incredible personal growth journey of my own the past few years into the world of art. I have become very involved with John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) in Sheboygan, WI. I am the chair of the JMKAC Indoor Gardens, a member of the Friends of the Arts Council, and a museum docent (teacher/tour guide). I try to take a new art class every month. I started joining my artist husband in his art studio to paint and experiment with making art. Coincidentally, my old office space was located in an art gallery and my current office space is in an entire building of art studios. My preferred social media has become Instagram. I try to post a new photograph every day. I have enjoyed experimenting with art and photography as ways to express myself. So I have decided to have a photoblog to complement this personal and professional journey that I am on.

Aromatherapy for February 2018

Aromatherapy for February 2018

‘Neroli’

Life happens. Things beyond our control and things within our control. A loved one may pass away. We don’t have the money to pay a bill. Our car breaks down. We get into an agreement with a friend. Stress at work is unbearable. We have too much to do and not enough time to do it. We all experience hard times. Sometimes it seems like nothing can go our way and we think the universe hates us. We ask “why me?” We just want to scream and cry in frustration. Neroli essential oil offers comfort, calmness, and a warm embrace to help you cope with and recover from difficult times.

Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara) is distilled or solvent extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree. It is also known as orange blossom or orange flower. It is native to India and China. It has a florally citrus aroma; soft and beautiful. Neroli essential oil can be pricey due to the number of flowers required to produce the essential oil as well as the production process itself. But it is a wonderful addition to your natural health care. Neroli essential oil is very relaxing and can relieve chronic anxiety, depression, fear, shock, agitation, and stress. Neroli Oil is a powerful sedative and is regarded as one of the best antidepressant remedies. Neroli resonates with the Heart Chakra and can evoke higher emotions like peace, joy, love, compassion, gratitude, and serenity. It can relax and soothe the soul and uplift the spirit. It brings balance to the mind, heart, emotions, and soul.

Recipe for Serenity, Peace, and Comfort
• 3 drops Neroli Essential Oil
• 1 drop Lemon Balm (Melissa) Essential Oil
• 5 drops Mandarin Essential Oil
• 1 drop Rose Essential Oil
• 5 drops Cedarwood Essential oil
• ½ ounce vegetable oil like coconut, almond, or grapeseed
• A little bottle, bowl, or container to mix oils in

Directions: This blend is meant to be inhaled. As you prepare the blend, have the thoughts and intent that you are inviting calmness, serenity, and peace into your life. Put a few drops in your hands, rub together, cup over your face, and deeply inhale several times. As you breathe in the aroma, state the affirmation: “I maintain my calm with inner peace and strength. I maintain my inner calm in the midst of chaos.”

July 2017 Third Eye Chakra Reading

July 2017 Third Eye Chakra Reading
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
Mind, Soul, and Self LLC
mindsoulandself.com

The Chakras are an ideal roadmap for personal growth and development. In 2017 we are journeying through the Chakras and focusing on one Chakra a month. July brings us to the Third Eye Chakra, the center of insight, vision, and intuition. I firmly believe that intuition is not a “gift” only some are lucky enough to have. I believe intuition is an innate ability we all have. Some of us are just too busy sleep walking through life to notice messages from the divine. This month, the Third Chakra asks you to tune inward…. Do you believe in intuition? Do you honor and listen to your intuition? Do you trust your intuition?

Brief Overview of Chakras: The Chakras are the main energy centers in our subtle body. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura or electromagnetic field. There are main Chakras, minor, subpersonal, and transpersonal Chakras. The Chakras’ function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Each chakra is associated with certain physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual interactions. Each chakra has personal growth themes, functions, and purposes. The concept of the Chakras has been around for thousands of years.

The Third Eye Chakra is located in the pineal gland, center of the forehead/brow area, and back of the head. It functions and purpose include clarity, seeing, intuition, insight, goals, dreams, aspirations, imagination, dreaming, visualization, inner sight, inner guidance, intelligence, self-realization, seeing your life clearly, and seeing the bigger picture. Its Sanskrit name is Ajna, which means “perception, knowledge, authority, and command.” Ajna honors the psychic within each of us. The lessons and goal of the Third Eye is to guide us into trusting our intuition and inner knowing. Third Eye Chakra needs that must be met for transformation and transcendence to occur include: the ability to dream and have goals and aspirations, realizing your personal potential, ability to see the whole picture and have insight, ability to find meaning, personal growth and peak experiences, self-actualization and self-fulfillment.

July 2017 Third Eye Chakra Forecast: Many think that all intuitive abilities are associated with the Third Eye; when in fact, each Chakra has an intuitive ability. The Chakras act as antennas that receive and interpret energy from the other realms. From clairsentience, to clairempathy, to claircognizance, we all pick up the subtle messages from the universe in a unique way and tend to have an intuitive ability that is more dominant than the others. There are many different ways to read and sense energy. Some feel, some know, some hear, some see, some taste, some smell. The key is learning to identify how you connect to the divine and then nurturing that ability by using it, strengthening it, and developing it. Sure everyone wants to be clairvoyant (see energy and see the spirit world), but that might not be the way you are psychic. This month, go inward in meditation and contemplation. Sit in silence. Be still. Be aware of all that is around you. How do YOU connect and communicate with the divine?

Third Eye Chakra Aromatherapy Blend
• 1 drop Tulsi (Holy Basil) essential oil
• 2 drops Clary Sage essential oil
• 3 drops Lavender essential oil
• 4 drops Sandalwood essential oil
• 1/2 ounce of a vegetable oil like coconut, jojoba, grapeseed or almond

Blend the essential oils into the vegetable oil then anoint your third eye. As you do this, repeat the following affirmations: “My inner vision is clear and strong. I see all things in clarity. I trust my intuition and inner vision and always understand the true meaning of life situations.”

Aroma Reading for December 2016

Aroma Reading for December 2016
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA

“Frankincense”

frankincense

December is filled with celebrations of religion and spirituality. In nature, it is a sacred time as wildlife slumbers, sleeps, and hibernates; preparing for rebirth in the spring. The Winter Solstice is this month and symbolizes the return of light. Winter is traditionally a time of self-reflection and deep inner work. This is the most magical time of the year. So of course, Frankincense, one of the most revered sacred and spiritual oils is our intuitive essential oil for this month. Frankincense (Bosweilla ssp.) is a resin formed when an incision is made into the tree. The tree oozes a liquid gum that is hardened and then distilled into an essential oil. Frankincense originates from Somalia, Ethiopia, India, and Arabia. Like many essential oils produced from resins, Frankincense is helpful for respiratory and skin concerns (bronchitis, congestion, scars, wrinkle, dry skin). Frankincense is also sedating, relaxing, and is great for anxiety, stress, sleeping problems, and nervousness. It can help quiet the mind and assist in meditation and contemplation. It can assist in communicating and connecting with the divine and higher realms. Frankincense resonates with the Crown Chakra and helps heals related spiritual and existential concerns. It can raise your vibration and cleanse negative, low vibrating energy from your aura.  Overall it is a fantastic oil for holistic healing with many mind/body/spirit uses. A great oil for every healing toolbox.

My Frankincense Forecast for December 2016: At the Winter Solstice, we call out with our innermost being for the return of the light and we honor its impending return.  This Solstice I know we all are feeling a great need for the light to come back, not just with the sun returning this year, but also for humanity in general. 2016 has perhaps been the toughest year in recent times for many on a collective level. The Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, is honored by many traditions as a sacred and rich time. The longest night is a fruitful time for setting intentions, to be birthed with the newborn Sun. What you dream of and set intent for now can grow with the Sun, and gain momentum in Spring. The dark before the dawn, just like new Moons, can be a powerful moment of magic, drawing in what you’d like to see happen in the New Year. Take some time in contemplation and meditation to clearly visualize what you want. Then release it to the universe to be manifested. And remember, it is always darkest before the light returns. Have hope and faith. Things will get better.

Holy Winter Solstice/Yule Aromatherapy Recipe
• 3 drops Frankincense
• 3 drops Myrrh
• 3 drops Palo Santo
• 5 drops Sandalwood
• 6 drops Cedarwood

Add to 2 ounces of water to make a mist/spray. Feel free to add any water safe gemstones or crystals to the bottle if they call out to you. This will then be a Gemstone Aromatherapy Blend. Great for clearing energy and setting sacred space for meditations, ritual, and celebrations.

Blessings for a wonderful holiday season and new year. Love and Light~

Aroma Reading for August 2016

Aroma Reading for August 2016
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
mindsoulandself.com

“Galbanum”

Galbanum
The intuitive essential oil for the month of August is Galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua). Galbanum has a unique fresh, earthy, green smell that definitely reminds me of summertime. It is an herb in the parsley and carrot family that has a long history of use as an incense and sacred plant since ancient times. It is believed the Egyptians used the resin for embalming.  To obtain the essential oil, incisions are made in the stalk of the plant and a gum seeps out. The gum is hardened and forms a resin which is then steam distilled. Like other resins, Galbanum has skin healing, anti-inflammatory, and respiratory healing properties. I find it particularly useful for emotional, spiritual, and energetic healing. It can be used to assist in meditation, purification, grounding, and centering. Inhale the oil and pair it with affirmations and personal growth work to heal deep emotional wounds.  I focus on using it in integration. Integration is pulling all your energies together; your heart, emotions, soul, energy, physical body, etc and uniting all parts of you, making you whole and complete…all the pieces of the puzzle are put back together again. Great for when you feel scattered and pulled apart. I like to anoint the feet at the end of an energy healing session to integrate my clients and combine it with grounding and centering techniques.

My Galbanum forecast for August 2016: Are you having troubles with concentrating? Do you feel confused and pulled in a million different directions right now? Are you having troubles making a decision? Are you at a crossroads in your life? Do you feel scattered? Galbanum is encouraging you to slow down, take a deep breath, and quiet the mind. Do not try so hard. Relax. Go with the flow. Do not try to control your situation. By letting go of the need to control, you will find your answer. Take some time to meditation and sit in silence. The universe is giving you your answer, you just need to listen and pay attention.

Spiritual Powerhouse Blend
• 3 drops Galbanum
• 3 drops Frankincense
• 3 drops Palo Santo
• 3 drops Tulsi (Holy Basil)
• 3 drops Elemi
• 5 drops Lavender

Use in a diffuser, blend in one ounce of a vegetable oil and use for anointing, or add to one ounce of water to make a mist or spray.

Aroma Reading for April 2016

Aroma Reading for April 2016
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
www.mindsoulandself.com

“Inula”

Inula

The intuitive essential oil for the month of April is Inula (Inula Graveolens). Inula is in the daisy/sunflower family and has a sweet medicinal but floral and intoxicating, powerful aroma. My husband and I were both pretty sick the past few weeks and I was drawn to use Inula (a few drops on a cotton pad and inhale for a few minutes at a time throughout the day). Inula is antibacterial, mucolytic, expectorant, antitussive, and an antihistamine. It is a great respiratory oil and helpful for head colds, coughs, congestion, and asthma.  There are no known hazards or contraindications with this oil. Please do not confuse it with the hazardous oil Inula helenium (elecampane). If Inula is distilled in a copper still, it will turn a beautiful emerald, turquoise, green color. This is a more expensive oil, but is so potent only a drop or two is needed. Due to its aroma, I personally prefer to use it by itself instead of in blends.

My Inula forecast for April 2016: Inula’s aroma, vibration, chemistry, and deep turquoise green color resonate with the higher heart chakra; the healers’ chakra located between the heart and throat. The higher heart asks you to think of how your actions impact not yourself, not others, but all of humanity. The higher heart is also a chakra of transition. Inula asks you to explore your role in helping move humanity forward during these turbulent times. Are you part of the problem or the solution? We are at a pivotal point in our collective journey right now. Be wise with your behaviors and decisions.

Blend and Meditation for the Higher Heart Chakra
• One drop Inula
• One drop Ho wood (or Rosewood)
• One drop Thyme

Place drops of oil on a cotton ball or cotton pad.
Close your eyes and deeply breathe in the aroma. Put your awareness and your attention on the higher heart chakra. Visualize healing energy coming directly from source/divine/heavens down through your crown chakra….through your third eye…..through your throat….through to the Higher Heart… Allow compassion to build up within your higher heart….allow unconditional love for all to build up in your higher heart…….. ….You are completely full of higher heart chakra energy. Have the intent that you want to send healing energy to help heal the world and all of humanity. Feel your higher heart chakra expanding and getting larger and larger…..its filling your entire chest, your entire body……Feel the expansion of your higher heart chakra to encompass everything in the room, outside the room, all the way to the center of the earth all the way around and completely covering the earth. Feel your turquoise higher heart energy healing the world.

When you are ready, bring your higher heart energy back into your center. Relax…..breathe in and breathe out…return to normal space and time. Namaste

Aroma Reading for March 2016

Aroma Reading for March 2016
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
www.mindsoulandself.com

“Roman Chamomile”

roman chamomile

The intuitive essential oil for the month of March is Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis). Roman Chamomile is calming, relaxing, and is great for anxiety, stress, migraines, headaches, and sleeping problems. It is one of the best oils for spasms and can relax the nerves. It assists with digestive ailments and can also help with aches and pains. It has a very pleasing aroma…smells a bit like hay and apples. Roman Chamomile is one of the safest and gentlest essential oils and can be used with children and pets (avoid if you have hay fever or are allergic to other members of the daisy family). Energetically, chamomile resonates with the solar plexus chakra and helps calm and transform agitated low vibrating emotions like anger, anxiety, and stress. Chamomile is sunny, full of life, peace, and optimism and is symbolic of the approaching Spring Equinox. Life is going to get brighter and things will get better.

My Chamomile forecast for March 2016: Have you been feeling a bit frazzled and on edge? Stressed? Frustrated? Having a hard time sleeping? Slow down and take a moment to breathe. Be in the here and now. Be in the present. We are a society of overbooking, overscheduling, and always on the go. Its ok to be still. Its ok to slow down. Chamomile encourages you to take some ‘me time’ to rest, relax, renew, and rejuvenate and then emerge radiant and vibrant with the approaching Spring!

Pillow Mist Recipe for Insomnia
• 4 drops Roman Chamomile
• 8 drops Neroli
• 12 drops Atlas Cedarwood
• 2-ounce spray bottle
• Distilled water
• 1 tablespoon vodka or witch hazel

Directions: Place the vodka or witch hazel in the spray bottle (this acts as a dispersant since water and oils do not mix). Add the essential oils then the gently swirl to blend together. Add the distilled water. When you are ready to go to bed, mist the spray several times on your pillow. Then lay down, breathe in deeply through your nose, hold your breath for a few moments, then slowly breath out your mouth, Repeat the deep breathing for a few rounds as you drift off to sleep. Sweet dreams!

Aroma Reading for February 2016

Aroma Reading for February 2016
By Christina Wilke-Burbach PhD, RMT, CA
www.mindsoulandself.com

“Rose”

rose

The intuitive essential oil for the month of February is Rose (Rosa × damascena).  The energy of Rose summons unconditional love; not only for others, but also for yourself. Rose resonates with the heart chakra and invokes high vibrating emotions such as empathy, compassion, joy, peace, gratitude, happiness, and harmony. Rose symbolizes the divine feminine. It is nurturing, sweet, comforting and has the ability to heal deep emotional wounds and comfort the heart. It has anti-depressant properties and can heal anger, despair, sorrow, sadness, grief, and loss. Let Rose hold you in her arms and soothe your soul. Everything will be alright. Rose essential oil can be expensive, but it is worth its weight in gold.

My Rose forecast for February 2016: Though the focus of February tends to be on Valentine’s Day and romantic relationships, this month Rose encourages you to look within your own heart at the love you have for yourself. Do you love yourself unconditionally? Do you see your strengths and positive qualities? Are you your own best friend? In order to deeply love others and allow others’ love into our lives, we must first learn to love ourselves. Some affirmations to help you on this journey: “I am worthy of love. I am loving to myself and others. I freely and easily give and receive love.” Sending you much love to light your path. Have a blessed February.

Recipe for Unconditional Love
2 drops Rose
4 drops Cardamom
1 drop Vanilla
3 drops Neroli
 6 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood
1-ounce cocoa butter

Mix the essential oils into the cocoa butter and blend well. Apply topically to the heart, chest, neck, and shoulders area. Massage some into your hands, cup them over your face, breathe in the aroma and state the following affirmations several times: “I am worthy of love. I am loving to myself and others. I freely and easily give and receive love.” The mixture can also be used as a massage cream…Double the recipe to make 2 ounces of cocoa butter.
